As of 2026, the only regular limited express trains operated by major private railways in Japan that perform a switchback are the “Enoshima Romancecar” and Seibu Railway’s “Chichibu.” The final stop, Katase-Enoshima Station, is the closest station to Enoshima Island, and after crossing the bridge immediately after exiting the ticket gate, you can see Enoshima and the Shonan sea. Enoshima Aquarium is also about a 5-minute walk away. Since the introduction of the “Metro Enoshima Romancecar” in the 2018 timetable revision, the morning train bound for Shinjuku has been renamed “Morning Way.”

The fare for the “Enoshima Romancecar” is the sum of the basic fare and the limited express surcharge. Compared to the Shonan-Shinjuku Line’s Special Rapid Service, the Romancecar takes slightly longer between Shinjuku and Fujisawa, but the advantage is that all seats are reserved, guaranteeing you a seat. Since all seats are reserved, there is no charge for non-reserved seats. The fact that you can be guaranteed a seat with a reservation is especially useful during the high season for beachgoers and holidays when you tend to have a lot of luggage.

Combination with the “Enoshima-Kamakura Free Pass”

For sightseeing in Enoshima and Kamakura, combining it with the “Enoshima-Kamakura Free Pass” is a great deal. How to Buy “Enoshima Romancecar” Tickets

e-Romancecar (online reservation)

Odakyu Electric Railway’s internet reservation service, e-Romancecar, allows you to purchase ticketless limited express tickets without registering as a member. Online purchases receive a 50 yen discount on the ticketless limited express fare. Tickets go on sale one month prior to the travel date at 10:00 AM. You can purchase limited express tickets at ticket offices at major Odakyu Line stations and at automatic ticket vending machines dedicated to limited express tickets. When riding the “Enoshima Romancecar,” you will need separate tickets for the basic fare and the limited express surcharge. IC cards such as Suica and PASMO can be used as the basic fare on all Odakyu lines. However, the limited express surcharge cannot be paid using the balance on your IC card; you must purchase a separate limited express ticket in advance.

Odakyu Electric Railway offers contactless payment services for train fares using credit cards and other payment methods. Supported brands include Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, and UnionPay. However, this service is not available at JR transfer gates at Shinjuku, Atsugi, and Fujisawa stations.

On clear days, Mount Fuji can be seen in some sections of the train. On weekends and holidays, some trains are coupled with the “Metro Enoshima Romancecar” or operate through services from the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line.

Ekiben (Station Bento Boxes) and Onboard Gourmet Food on the “Enoshima Romancecar”

Since the timetable revision in March 2021, onboard sales service has been discontinued on all Romancecar trains. If you want to enjoy a meal, it is recommended to prepare in advance at an ekiben shop or stall around Shinjuku Station. There are plenty of restaurants around Katase-Enoshima Station and Enoshima where you can enjoy Shonan specialties such as shirasu-don (whitebait rice bowl). Enoshima also has plenty of sightseeing spots that you can enjoy while strolling around, such as the Enoshima Sea Candle and Enoshima Shrine.

The “Enoshima Romancecar” has all reserved seats, so if you know your travel dates, it is recommended to make a reservation as early as possible. On weekdays, there is only one southbound and three northbound trains, so if you are considering traveling on a weekday, please check the timetable in advance. When the train makes a switchback at Fujisawa Station, passengers cannot board or alight; it is only an operational stop, so please be aware of this if you plan to get off at an intermediate station.

Since there is no onboard service, please prepare any meals you plan to eat before boarding. On weekends and holidays, some trains are coupled with the “Hakone Romancecar,” so please check your seat number to avoid boarding the wrong car.
